Pelvic Floor Therapy Q & A

What is stress urinary incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common problem that affects as many as 40% of the women in the US. SUI causes urinary leakage that typically occurs with activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as:

  • Coughing
  • Lifting
  • Bending
  • Laughing

Factors that increase your risk for SUI include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Vaginal delivery
  • Obesity
  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Postmenopausal state

Some women experience mild symptoms but others often find this issue greatly interferes with their enjoyment and participation in social activities.

How does vaginal laser therapy improve bladder control?

The vaginal wall plays a vital role in the effectiveness of your pelvic floor musculature by holding your bladder, uterus, and other pelvic structures in place. The bladder lies over the vaginal wall. When the vaginal wall weakens or loses its strength, the bladder begins to droop or prolapse. This alters the position and effectiveness of the bladder sphincter and other structures responsible for holding your urine in place until you’re ready to visit the bathroom. This leads to SUI. Laser therapy rejuvenates the lining of the vagina and improves vaginal health, which strengthens the vaginal wall and increases bladder support.

How does a laser improve vaginal health?

The lasers used for vaginal rejuvenation are specially designed to fit into the vagina and use CO2 to emit energy that ablates or removes the top layers of tissue lining the vagina, down to a depth of approximately 0.5 millimeters. As these top layers of “skin” are removed, the body goes into healing mode by stimulating collagen production and increased blood flow to the area. This combination heals, tones, and tightens the vaginal wall.

Focused as always on providing the best care available for their patients, the providers at South Miami OB/GYN Associates use the Lumenis® FemTouch™, the latest laser technology for vaginal treatments. An added bonus is that this therapy may help decrease the vaginal dryness and atrophy often associated with menopause.

How long does the treatment take?

It’s a relatively short procedure, typically lasting 30 minutes or less, but you may require multiple treatments.

Patients report no discomfort and can return to normal activity immediately afterward, other than avoiding any sexual intercourse for 3-5 days.
